STRONG COMMITMENT TO OUR YOUTH
Tri-City Area United Way is committed to supporting programs for our youth.
ALL STARS PROGRAM
The ALL STARS program teaches children positive living skills that are designed to give them a lifetime free of substance abuse, primarily alcohol, tobacco, marijuana and inhalants and to delay the onset of first use.
- Students who had behavior and attutude issues were making changes because the ALL STAR program points out to the students that negative behaviors and attitudes will not get them what they desire. Students learned that bullying and cyber-bullying were not an option and that they needed to be aware of the consequences.
BAY CLIFF HEALTH CAMP
The Bay Cliff Health Camp program provides an intensive 6-week camping experience for children with physical disabilities at minimal cost to families.
- A teen at the Bay Cliff Health Camp practiced all summer to be able to use just one crutch as she was escorted into the prom which was held at the camp.
CASA (Court Apointed Special Advocate)
CASA collaborates with attorneys, schools, and other agencies in the community who provide legal services to the child and family.
- A child had been in 12 different placements and has had 6 changes in social workers for 5 years, which was more that half the child's life. The only constant for this child was the same CASA volunteer worker during this entire period. What a difference this worker made!
DAR BOYS/GIRLS CLUB
At the DAR Boys/Girls Club of Marinette and Menominee, funding is provided for children to have a safe place to go while their parents work. Kids have fun at the DAR, and they are taught respect, rules, and team play in a healthy environment.
- A youth was part of the local DAR Boys/Girls club since 2005 and has become the "Student of the Year."
HEALTHY YOUTH COALITION
The Healthy Youth Coalition of Marinette and Menominee Counties is a program that consists of teen leadership training, alcohol , tobacco and other drug prevention. The Healthy Youth Coalition is for youth ranging from elementary classrooms to adults in community groups and parent meetings.
- Our Healthy Youth Coalition was in the semi-finals in the "Courageous Persuaders" national scholarship competition. The students had to create a TV commercial targeted at middle school students to warn them about the dangers of underage drinnking. This is an excellent example of students teaching students against substance abuse.
